New hydrothermal field discovered during the Oceano Azul Expedition in the Azores was named “LUSO”. What else?

The scientific team attributed this name because it was the first time that an expedition organized by a Portuguese institution, led by Portuguese scientists and using national ships and means finds a deep sea hydrothermal field in Portuguese waters.

This is the first time, an expedition organized by a Portuguese institution, led by Portuguese scientists in partnership with international partners and using national ships and means, such as the ROV "LUSO", finds a deep sea hydrothermal field in Portuguese waters.

The ROV Luso is a remotely operated vehicle capable of diving to depths of 6,000m and its main purpose is the selective collection of biologigal and geological samples from the seabed.

Seven days of Oceano Azul Expedition and we had the chance to spot the smallest and strange marine creatures such as this blue sea slug (Glaucus atlanticus)

Seven days of #OceanoAzulExpedition and we had the chance to spot the smallest and strange marine creatures such as this blue sea slug (Glaucus atlanticus) with 3cm and the larger ones like this Sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis) with 13m, an Endangered sea mammal according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. We still hope to spot blue whales.
